Elmwood Park, NJ, USA; July 19, 2013 —The Craft & Hobby Association (CHA) announced the full-year results from the 2012 State of the Craft Industry report. The State of the Craft Industry report is a custom quantitative research study commissioned to determine participation in crafting for the entire U.S. population and by specified category segments. The State of the Craft Industry report found that 56 percent of U.S. households or 62.5 million people participated in one or more crafting activities during the last year.

Beginning in June 2011, a task force of CHA members was assembled to collaborate with the research survey provider to develop a report with actionable results that would guide CHA members to enhance sales.

“It was important to involve companies from a cross-section of the membership when developing the survey. The research task force assisted in developing a report that provides CHA members with information to guide individual business decisions such as store layouts, internet expansion, product development and marketing messaging,” says John Laurie, research task force committee chair and President of Coats & Clark.

The State of the Craft Industry report is unlike any past CHA research. It provides many benefits including tracking use of distribution channels for craft products and developing demographic profiles of crafters. Due to the changes in methodology, sample size, and reclassification of craft segments, direct comparisons between the 2012 State of the Industry report and previous CHA studies is not valid, nor recommended.

The State of the Craft Industry report tracks metrics in fourteen broad craft category segments.

Complete reports are available free to CHA members or for purchase via email request to Keri Cunningham, Director of Marketing, at kcunningham@craftandhobby.org.
